Thanks cofty. The scary part is when he says that what your grandparents did might have an influence on what you do now. -

Cognitive Dissonance
by LexIsFree inthe cognitive dissonance amongst jws has never been more obvious to me then what i just experience in the last 5 min.
long story short i had a phone conversation w/my mom about some things and i mentioned to her to look up what has been going on with their beloved organization in australia.
brother geoffrey jackson of the holy governing body was caught lying numerous times about several subjects including disassociations & shunning.

Public Prayers - Scriptural?
by OverlappingGeneralizations insomething that has always been a pet peeve of mine- public prayers.
is that even scriptural?
i know many churches (along with the jws) do it.

Island Man:
"Jesus didn't condemn public prayer. Jesus himself prayed publicly on occasion such as when he raised up Lazarus. What Jesus condemned was praying publicly for the purpose of impressing others with your righteousness."
Jesus did not say "Don't pray hypocritically in public" he was emphasizing private prayer in order to prevent the mere appearance of hypocrisy.
"But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you." - Matthew 6:6 New International Version
1 Corinthians 14:16 referred to prayers made amongst believers.
As for Lazarus' resurrection Jesus would be the exception to his own rule. He was trying to impress others. Same thing would apply to his followers when working miracles in his name not just prayers in general.

CalebInFloroda: "The Scriptures are filled with examples of approved public prayers."
Yet Jesus condemned public prayer. Yet another inconsistency within the Bible.

What were you favorite book in the organization? I know what you're thinking...LOL!
by BashfulAshG inwhat were *your favorite *books in the organization?.
out of all of those books, i liked "mankind's search for god.
" however, it appears to me that this book is incredibly obscure and no one recalls studying it during the old book study format.

I had a collection of 60 foreign language "Truth" books back in the days when they were only 25 cents each. I remember that when I ordered a book in a foreign language that was out of print the Watchtower would refund me in postage stamps
It was the book I used in my first study. They used to call it the blue bomb. There was no real need to recycle them into another book but then the Society thrives on pseudo-change.
I dumped them after my disfellowshipping which I now regret. They could have fetched a good price on E bay.

Introducing Myself
by Peony ini've finally got round to joining the site (after over 2 years lurking!
i was born into jws, pioneered for 10 years (met my husband at pioneer school).
had health issues that saw me catapulted away from 'the centre of the cong' and wow what a different place that was!

Welcome Peony. I can empathize with you on those panic attacks; I used to have them out in field service. Stopping field service literally felt like having a heavy weight taken off my chest. Take care of your health, it's worth more than all those phony former friends are.

How many doctrines exposed by Ray Franz in Crisis of Conscience have since been changed by "New Light"?
by Wasanelder Once ini read coc long ago.
those of you more able to recall the text, i ask: how many doctrines did ray franz expose / comment on in crisis of conscience have been done away with due to "new light"?
i think it would be interesting to see if ray called bs on doctrines that were later changed because the governing body also realized they were bs.

I forget if this was covered in his book Crisis of Conscience or his other book In Search of Christian Freedom but he criticized the superfluous use of type antitype doctrine. It took them a long time after those books were written to drop the overuse of that doctrine. -
